In 1963, the Westfield Group purchased land on the north-west corner of Anzac Parade and Maroubra Road, where it built a small shopping arcade anchored by a Coles supermarket.
Stockland acquired the site in the 1970s and developed a new shopping centre. Opened in 1981 as Stockland Mall, it featured a Grace Bros department store, Coles and Franklins supermarkets, and more than 60 specialty shops arranged around a central courtyard. In 1994 the centre was rebranded as Stockland ShopSmart Maroubra, operating as a factory outlet mall.
Stockland sold the property in 2000, and by the end of 2002 all stores had closed to make way for demolition and the construction of a new mixed shopping centre and apartment complex, known as Pacific Square. Pacific Square is anchored by Coles and Aldi supermarkets, with many speciality stores indoors, and an outdoor courtyard circled by a variety of restaurants.
