TitleModel ship, Astrolabe (1811-1851)About this objectThis detailed ship model was constructed after L'Astrolabe on a scale of 1/50, a French vessel originally launched as La Coquille in 1811. She was commended by Louis Isidore Dupperrey on a scientific voyage from 1822 to 1825, which included a visit to Botany Bay. Jules Dumont d’Urville served as the second-in-command on the voyage.
On her return to France, the ship was refitted and renamed L'Astrolabe in honour of one of the lost ships of Jean François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse. Under d’Urville’s command, L'Astrolabe departed Toulon on 25 April 1826 in search of Lapérouse, and reached Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands on 21 February 1828, where the remains of L’Astrolabe and La Boussole were discovered – bringing partial closure to the mystery associated with this French explorer.
