One side represents the harbour of Brest at the departure of L'Astrolabe and La Boussole in 1785, and the other side shows an engraved portrait of La Perouse with his date of birth and (presumed) death (1741-1788) as well as a mention and engraved side portrait of the King with his latin name, Ludovicus XVI - who commissioned the expedition.
