On one side, it commemorates La Perouse reaching the South China coast at Macau on January 3rd, 1787, to then crossing to Kamchatka, from where he sent some of his expeditions journals to France. The other side of the medallion tells the violent encounters between La Perouse's crew and Samoans, leading to the death of La Perouse's second-in-command de Langle on December 11, 1787. This altercation also later led to Pere Receveur's death, from a wounded eye supposingly that happened in the Samoan Islands.
