Its design and colour palette were inspired by the painting "Louis XVI giving final instructions to the Comte de la Perouse in 1785".
The original work by Nicolas-André Monsiau is held at the Palace of Versailles. A later copy by Édouard Nuel, housed in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, served as the visual reference for this costume.
