Made from copper from Nelson’s flagship Victory, it was presented by the British and Foreign Sailor’s Society in 1908 to Arthur Robert William Littlewood Jones, a probationary student teacher at the District School in Goulburn, for winning first prize for the best essay on Captain James Cook, his voyages, and their value to the Empire, commerce, and Christianity. The plate features a sailing ship at its centre, surrounded by shields, arrows, scrolls, and twisted chain designs, with inscriptions detailing the commemoration and the donor society.Object No.2016.14Physical descriptionA large, round engraved copper plate with six deep curved sides. The plate’s interior is fully engraved with decorative shields, arrows, scrolls, and twisted chain motifs. The central design depicts a sailing ship at sea, encircled by the inscription: “England expects that every man will do his duty Oct 21st 1805 - Oct 21st 1905.” Above the circle is a shield engraved with “NELSON’S VICTORY”, and below the circle “CENTENARY MEMENTO ERV11”. To the left and right of the central circle, scrolls read: “Presented by the British and Foreign Sailor’s Society” and “Containing Victory Copper from Lords of Admiralty” respectively. An inscription at the base of the interior sides reads: “To Arthur R.W.L.
