The incinerator was mostly used to recycle the municipality’s rubbish and the ash waste material was mainly re-used as road-fill or similar. The building was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and was of "modern design, (with) a monumental flue tower replacing the usual chimney stack." (SMH 20/11/1930)
