TitleWooden sign, Salvation Army Home for Women & ChildrenDatec 1944About this objectThis wooden sign used to stand outside the Cable Station building between 1944 and 1987, when the building was administered by the Salvation Army as a refuge for women and children.
In 1944, at the request of the state government, the Salvation Army agreed to manage the Cable Staton as a refuge for destitute women and children – a contribution by the Salvation Army towards assisting the State in the field of social welfare during the Second World War. This refuge provided temporary accommodation for up to 35 people at one time. Rooms were of dormitory type, each containing three to six beds. Matron G. McDowell, who was in charge of the Salvation Army’s Elizabeth Street hostel, was assigned to supervise the La Perouse venue with a resident officer.
