John Fenton was from South Kensington (now Kingsford) and represented the district for 9 years on the council. While he was Mayor, he was one of the people responsible for the creation of the Matraville Soldiers' Settlement, being made head of the coluntary workers' settlement and a member of the board of control. He was further a member of the Botany Cemetery Trust, and an active member, including treasurer for some years, of the Eastern Suburbs Master Builders' Association.
