A grand Italianate style two storey victorian mansion built about 1883 by John Starkey, a soft drink manufacturer who was also an Alderman on Randwick Council. This imposing Victorian mansion with its eastern tower was converted into 12 flats in 1921, with some alterations, such as the enclosing of verandahs. However, the configuration of the original rooms remains mostly intact with many original decorative elements inside. The land was originally granted to Denis Kearney in 1856, the block bound by Brook, Bream, and Mount Streets and Alison Road, and was sold to John Starkey in 1882, who built the imposing house close to Brook Street in 1883. Starkey died at Smithfield Grange on the 14th of April 1898. The surrounding land was subdivided in 1908 into 27 residential lots.
