In 2008, under the cover of darkness, two anonymous artists snuck down to Maroubra beach and painted a large square concrete air vent on top of a stormwater outlet as a Rubiks Cube, supposedly in an unsolvable pattern. It became so popular that it is now a permanent feature of the beach, with Randwick council refreshing the paint when needed. In 2017, a local resident, Johnny, temporarily turned the drain into a Lamington to celebrate National Lamington Day and had previously wrapped it with Christmas paper with a big red bow, to celebrate Christmas. In 2020, It was repainted in pastel colours. And in December 2023, the artists snuck back to the beach to 'solve' the cube.
