The tomb commemorates Friar Pere Receveur, a Franciscan monk and scientist who came to Australia on exhibition with La Perouse as a Chaplain and naturalist. He is the first know frenchman to have died and be buried in New South Wales, after being speared while in Samoa. The tomb was erected over his grave, comissioned by Hyacinthe de Bougainville in 1825, and completed in 1828. The inscription on the tomb in French says "Here lies L Receveur French Preist of Friars Minor, Scientist in the Voyage Around the World under the leadership of de Laperouse, died February 17th, 1788."
