Full titleOriginal Randwick Racecourse One Furlong PostDatec 1959DescriptionImage of stone found at Royal Randwick Racecourse believed to be the original one furlong post set at the course in the 1860s. Found by the Australian Jockey Club's plumber, Owen McCarthy, seen in the photo jesturing to the marks in the stone. A furlong is a measure of distance in imperial units customarily equal to one-eighth of a mile, equivalent to 660 feet or approximately 201 meters. The stone was found as plumbers were repairing a collapsed drain near the track, believing the weight of the buried stone was what caused the earthernware pipe. The club thought the stone was buried after 30 years of use after the top section broke off, original brown paint could still be seen on the stone.
